HOTEL DESIGN

The concept Forest of Illusion has been used to inspire the Hotel Design. My  partner and I chose to use the original exterior of the building, while also adding a green glass extension. The main idea and purpose was to provide visitors with the original exterior perception. However, upon entering the hotel they will be amazed and surprised to have entered into a space filled with an exhilarating, unpredicted green space. The interiors are filled with several  floors  that include various plantations; such as, tropical plants, flowers, vines and many more. This Hotel Design is meant to play the role of an illusion where upon entering, visitors will believe that it is the design of an ordinary Downtown building that matches its exteriors. Guests and visitors Guests will be provided with the ultimate, unexpected experience of an Interior forest

The building at 460 King Street West was a hotel building built in 1875, which was called Richardson House owned by James Richardson. In 1906 it was then owned by Robert Falconer and was renamed Hotel Falconer .In 1914 it was owned by Charles Zeigler and was renamed Zeigler’s Hotel. In 1917 the hotel mortgage was foreclosed and later bought by Imperial Bank of Canada (CIBC) and renamed it Hotel Spadina to counter prejudice against German names during world War 1. The name Hotel Spadina lasted for 80 years. In 1997 the hotel was renamed Global Village Backpackers and became the largest hostel which was called Youth Hostel and later closed down on January 20th 2014. Allied Properties Real Estate Investment Trust Purchased the building on July 2014 and  stripped paint off the east and south facades in late 2014. Presently it is an Educational Institute called BrainStation containing a Quantum Coffee.

Some building textures surrounding 460 King Street West include various colors of brick, steel, concrete, wood sidings and stone.

LOBBY

The first impression upon entering the space is the Lobby area. Occupants are struck with greenery, natural materials and elements found on all sides of the space. By using innovative technology, the floor cuts in between showcasing the concrete and wood on opposing sides. The tall curtains add lustre and personality to the space. The plantation and greenery is further used to accentuate our concept of Forest of Illusion.

Interior forest

FOREST AREA

This space is the driving force of our concept, Forest of Illusion . This concept is reflected throughout this area, due to the interior which is filled with various kinds of plantations (tropical plants, ground covers, flowers). Moreover, the dark green glass further accentuates the feeling of being inside a forest, instead of the bustling streets of Toronto.
